A Day On The Dock in Liverpool

Many people are surprised to discover that outside of London, Liverpool is the city with more museums and art galleries than any other within the UK. A fact reflected in Liverpool's appointment as the European Capital of Culture in 2008. There are no less than seven national museums within Liverpool's city centre, including the interactive and award winning World Musuem. Art plays a huge role in Liverpool's culture too, with nearly thirty art galleries regularly exhibiting artwork within the city.

It's not all high brow however, Liverpool is also an energetic city with a many high street treats for the shopaholic. The city's St Johns Centre plays host to over one hundred shops, ranging from international high street brands down to small, independent and quirky outlets. The glass-fronted Clayton Square Centre mixes the cosmopolitan, modern shops of Liverpool with an open plan art gallery to represent the city's cultural side. Speaking of which, Concert Square hosts many of the city's performance venues and for those or a theatrical slant, the Liverpool Playhouse and Everyman Theatres offer some of the best and most varied programmes outside of London's West End.

There are indeed many great things to do in Liverpool, and in a city wioth so much choice - where should you go? If you are here for one day only, what should you do? We believe that no trip to Liverpool should go without a good day spent on the Albert Dock, and here's why:

1. Now a world heritage site, The Albert Dock has more Grade I listed buildings than anywhere else in the UK and enjoys one of the most breathtaking waterfront skylines in Europe. A skyline that some travel commentators have compared to that of Manhatten in New York.

2. The Dock is home to The Tate Liverpool, a world famous gallery that aspires to 'always be thought provoking' in it's promotion of modern and contemporary art exhibitions.

3. The International Slavery Museum digs into the often dark history of The International Slave Trade and addresses the importance of freedom, civil liberty, identity and racial equality for all within the modern world.

4. The Bugworld Experience allows visitors to view the world literally through a bug's eyes. Not for the faint hearted, you will be invited to touch and even hold any number of bugs, many of which are now on the endangered species list.

5. A trip to Liverpool would not be complete without looking up John, Paul, George and Ringo at The Beatles Story. The museum follows their history back to their Liverpool roots and even has a full replica of the original 1960's Cavern Club and a 'walk-in' Yellow Submarine!

6. After all those museums, the Dock also has a host of cool bars, restaurants and shopping outlets for you to browse through and enjoy a Latte or maybe even a shot of something stronger?

And if all that the Dock offers is still not enough to send you home content and happy to your Liverpool Hotel, then why not plan to visit the home of Liverpool or Everton FC? Perhaps the only attractions in Liverpool that can claim to be as world famous as those Beatles!
