When you head to Eastbourne a trip to the beach is in order. Although you will find pebbles instead of sand, it is still a great place to visit and the town has long been a famous seaside holiday destination. The pier is one of the best in the country and dates back to 1870. You’ll find lots of shops, arcades and restaurants, and it makes for a pleasant stroll.

At the beach you will also find the famous bandstand. This is still put to use in the summer, and there are plenty of seats so if you are in town at the right time then you may be able to enjoy a concert.

If you feel like a short trip out of the town then you might want to visit the famous Beachy Head. Although it has become known as a popular suicide spot over the years, the 162-metre cliffs provide spectacular views around the surrounding area, and you can even see as far as the Isle of Wight in the right conditions.

The Military Museum is located near to the beach and tells the story of the town during the Second World War when Eastbourne had to protect itself from the risk of invasion by German forces.

For some interesting artwork, you should visit the Musgrave Collection. Here you will find a number of works of art as well as historical items, some of which date back to Roman times.

The beach is probably what Eastbourne is best known for. Although it may not be the most popular seaside holiday destination in the UK, it still attracts a lot of holidaymakers throughout the hotter summer months. The promenade stretches for two miles and is great for an afternoon stroll.

Beachy Head has grown a rather unfortunate reputation of being one of the top suicide spots in the country. However, it is beautiful to visit, and if you venture a bit further along you will find the Seven Sisters cliffs.

The surrounding countryside also includes the South Downs, a stunning area of natural beauty which is a magnet for hikers and nature lovers.

Eastbourne holds the annual AEGON International Tennis Championships which take place at Devonshire Park in June. This event is often used as a warm-up for Wimbledon and is regularly attended by some of the top women tennis players.

Eastbourne is also known for its famous Martello Tower. This defensive fort was build back in the time of the Napoleonic Wars and is now a small museum.
