The beach is one of the biggest attractions here during the summer months. You'll have to travel just outside the town to reach it, but it is well worth the short journey.

Le Havre is best known for being a very busy port town. Indeed, the port here is second only to Marseille in terms of traffic. The name of the town itself means 'the harbour'.

Le Havre was badly damaged during World War II in the Battle of Normandy. Thousands of buildings were destroyed, and thousands of people were killed. But after the war the town was rebuilt and in 2005 it even became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It was from Le Havre that René Goulaine de Laudonnière set off in 1564 to found the first French colony in the New World, Fort Caroline, which is near to Jacksonville in Florida.
