Lille was even given the nickname of the 'Manchester of France' due to its industrial importance.

During World War I, troops in Lille held off the Germans by tricking them into believing that they had more artillery than they actually did. In fact, all they possessed was a cannon. However, once the Germans found out that they had been fooled, they burned down a large section of the city and occupied it.

Lille is a very cultural city, and indeed it was chosen as the European Capital of Culture in 2004.
