The Town Hall is one of the finest buildings in Rennes, and you will find it in the Place de la Mairie. It is still used as a place of work, although it often houses exhibitions.
St Pierre Cathedral is a very beautiful church which dates back to the 17th century, although it has undergone many changes over the years. The golden interior is especially beautiful.
Another public building worth seeing is the Palace of the Breton Parliament which was built in the 17th century. Although the breakaway parliament which occupied it did not last, the building remains and is a very popular attraction.

Best Known For:
Rennes is perhaps most well known for the trial of Alfred Dreyfrus which took place here in 1894. This artillery officer was put on trial for treason and was convicted in Rennes, although he was eventually exonerated. It is known as being one of the biggest political dramas in the history of the country.
Rennes was the location for a POW camp during World War II where 50,000 German prisoners were held after the liberation of the city on August 4, 1944.
One of the most important cultural events of the year is the music festival which is famous throughout the whole of France. |
