Key Tourist Sights:

The Chateau de Saint Malo is one of the main landmarks of the city. It used to be where the governor lived, and dates back a number of centuries. Although damaged during World War II, it was repaired and you can now view it when you visit.

Another interesting building to visit is Fort de la Cité. It is a military fort constructed in the 18th century, and it too was damaged during World War II, notably during the D-Day landings. It was also used as a military base by the Germans.

There are a number of beautiful beaches to explore when you stay in Saint Malo. Grand Plage is perhaps the most popular, but others you may want to visit include Plage de Bas Sablons in the south and Plage de Bon Secours in the centre.

St Vincent Cathedral suffered damage during World War II like many of the other buildings in the city, but the cathedral thankfully has been restored to its former glory. It dates back to the 11th century and is clearly visible from anywhere in the old town.

If you fancy a flutter then a trip to Saint Malo Casino could be in order. This is one of the premier leisure venues in the city so if you've got some spare euros to hand then it could be a fun way to spend them.

Best Known For:

Saint Malo used to be famous for being an important base for the corsairs, who were French pirates. They used the city as their base and forced passing English ships to pay them.

Saint Malo also has a long and esteemed seafaring history, and some notable characters came from the city. One of these was Jacques Cartier, the discoverer of Canada. It was also the base for the first colonists of the Falklands Islands. They named the islands Îles Malouines, which became Islas Malvinas in Spanish.

The city is also famous for its oysters, so make sure you try these during your stay. You won't have to look far because the city has a very high concentration of seafood restaurants.
