Newport Museum and Art Gallery is where you should go to discover the history of the area over the millennia. This museum was founded in 1888 and is one of the best in Wales. It has an impressive collection of archaeological artefacts, and there is also a good art gallery.
Newport Castle dates back to the 14th century, but it now lies in ruins. That does not mean that it is not worth visiting, however, and you should take the opportunity to experience the walkway that goes through the castle.
Pentre Ifan is one of the most important megalithic sites in the country, dating back about 6,000 years. This burial chamber is about three miles from Newport, and you will also be able to enjoy fantastic views over the surrounding landscape when you arrive.
St Woolos Cathedral is a Norman building from the 12th century. Originally a church, the Victorians restored it and it became a cathedral in 1921.
Tredegar House is a lovely 17th-century building. There are 90 acres of parkland to explore around it, and one of the highlights is the excellent art collection on display.

One of the things which Newport is most famous for is the Transporter Bridge. This is one of just seven left in the world and it still works. It was constructed in 1906 and received a £3 million refurbishment in the 1980s. You can either cross by foot or with your car, and it is a unique experience.
The Celtic Manor Hotel is one of the best places for golf in the whole of Wales. It has held the Ryder Cup and it is the home of the Welsh Open.
Newport grew significantly over the years due to the export of iron and coal, but it only became a city in 2002.
